Dear Fellow Type 1 Diabetic,

Let me start by acknowledging that us T1Ds have it rough.

Between the never-ending daily requirement for finger pricks and injections...

To the blood sugar roller coasters that can seemingly strike out of nowhere...

To the majority of the world having absolutely no understanding that this disease was not brought on by our lifestyle or choices.

And that's really just the tip of the iceberg.

But I want to acknowledge you and say that I see you and your effort and I can appreciate everything that you battle on a daily basis.

Over the past 25 years of being T1D, I have seen that another big challenge we have is understanding how to exercise without our blood sugar crashing down during our workout, spiking up high for hours after, or having to load up on carbs before.

We are put in a tough position because we are told by our doctors that we need to be exercising but we are given very little guidance that's actually useful.

So we turn to the typical workouts that the mainstream fitness industry offers and we find that things just get worse.

Unfortunately, this causes the majority of T1Ds to avoid exercising altogether... but it doesn't have to be this way!

This blood sugar roller coaster with exercise used to be a huge challenge for me, too.

From the time I was diagnosed at 9 years old until I was 25, exercise always threw my blood sugar for a loop.

Sometimes I would just be out for a walk and start to feel my blood sugar crashing.

Other times I would be in the middle of a basketball game and could feel my blood sugar spiking.

I always felt like I had to get my blood sugar up to around 200 before I started to workout, and then sometimes it would nestle down to around 120 by the time I was done, while other times it would shoot up to 250 or higher.

To me, there didn't appear to be much rhyme or reason for why my blood sugar would go one way or the other.

But then, in 2012, everything changed.

I got my labs run and my A1c came back at 7.3, which for me was HIGH.

I was 24 years old and a couple years removed from playing college basketball.

I had been studying exercise science and working as a personal trainer, and I knew my long-term health depended on making sure my blood sugar stayed well-regulated.

7.3 was not going to cut it.

It may not have been a threat at that moment, but I knew I would face the consequences later in life if things didn't change.

Exercise was supposed to build my health, so why did it seem to be making me worse?

I knew I need to make a change.

I started to drift away from doing the type of workouts the mainstream fitness industry and sports performance world promoted.

Instead, I focused my workouts on four main aspects that were hardly discussed at all on the popular platforms but seemed promising based on the research papers I was reading.

At my next blood draw, the results blew my mind!

6.3!! I couldn't believe it!

I had knocked off an entire percentage point from my A1c simply by changing HOW I was exercising.

And to add to it - I was no longer experiencing the crazy fluctuations in my blood sugar during and after my workouts AND I didn't need to load myself up on carbs before I exercised to try to prevent the lows.

Since that time, I have continued to refine this process of how to go about exercising to minimize my blood sugar fluctuations and have consistently had A1c readings that ranged from 5.8 to 6.4.

And if there are ever times when my A1c goes above 6.4, I recommit myself to fine-tuning these four main variables of exercise and I am able to drop back into the low 6s...
